Active Listening: Book/Music/Video

Book: For Younger Youth (ages 6-9): “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. This story follows a young girl named Vashti who learns to embrace her creativity and take the first step toward self-expression by simply making a mark. It emphasizes the importance of taking that initial step toward realizing one’s potential and the transformative power of courage and determination.

Book: For older youth (ages 10-12): “The Power of One: Every Act of Kindness Counts” by Trudy Ludwig. This book explores the ripple effect of kindness and how small acts of compassion can make a big difference in the world. It encourages older youth to take proactive steps towards creating positive change in their communities and highlights the value of individual actions in shaping collective experiences.

Music: “Beautiful Day” by U2 – This optimistic and uplifting song celebrates the beauty of life and encourages listeners to appreciate the present moment.

Music: “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper – This heartfelt ballad celebrates authenticity and encourages listeners to embrace their true selves.

Creative Expression: “Empowering Paths: Activities for Aligning Values and Actions”

Youth embark on a values walk, observing nature to recognize values like kindness and cooperation. They craft intentions collages, visualizing their goals for the week. In the activation relay, teams demonstrate values through tasks. Guided visualization empowers them to pursue aspirations with determination and aligned values.

Connecting: Aligning Actions with Values

Youths explore the relationship between personal values, intentions, and actions. Through dialogue, they identify values, discuss aligning intentions with goals, share motivating experiences, address obstacles, and recognize the impact of small actions on personal growth and community change. As a take-home practice, youth can engage in daily reflection, journaling about moments where their actions aligned with their values and identifying areas for growth. This fosters self-awareness and mindfulness, empowering them to live more intentionally.
