Curriculum Overview:
Youth explore peace through the calming chant of “Om Shanti” and interactive activities like creating a group peace mandala and participating in a mindful obstacle course. Through stories, music, and hands-on learning, they will discover how to cultivate inner peace and share it with others.
September Monthly Theme: Pieces into Peace
Week 3 Value: Om Shanti Om
Affirmation: I am a source of peace within, and I share that peace with the world around me
Spiritual Lesson:
Youth will experience the spiritual practice of cultivating peace within themselves and their community. Through chanting “Om Shanti,” creative expression, and interactive activities, they will learn how inner peace connects to outer peace and how their positive intentions can uplift those around them. The lesson encourages them to see themselves as part of a spiritual community where they can practice peace, kindness, and unity, fostering a deeper sense of connection with others and the world.
Spiritual Practice: Chanting Om Shanti
Youth learn to create and spread peace through a breathing exercise and learn the chant, Om Shanti, to bring about inner peace and to send peace to others at our center’s new outdoor Peace pole installation.
Active Listening: Book/Music/Video
Story: “Ubuntu and Peace” about a village that shows kindness to someone who makes a mistake by celebrating their goodness instead of punishing them
Book: Everyday Ubuntu: Living Better Together, the African Way by Mungi Ngomane
Music: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”
Music: “Namaste Song” by Karen Drucker
Creative Expression: “Peace Project”
Youth work together to create an individual and collective Peace Project based on what peace means to them to share during our 5th Sunday Youth/Adult Service.
Connecting: Peace Squares
Youth design their own Peace Squares symbolizing what peace means to them. These squares will be put together to form a Peace Banner for the center.
