Youth Curriculum, 2-11-24

Announcements:

Our INSPIRE Life-Skills Workshop for Teens is open to our greater community, ages 13-18. Reach out to people you know in your community and invite them to check out our youth & family page on our cslolympia.org website for more information to register for the teen life-skills workshops beginning February 25th.

If you would love to be a guest presenter and share a skill like budgeting, cooking, and interviewing skills at one of our INSPIRE Life-Skills Workshop for Teens, please connect with our youth director, Adrienne.

Curriculum Overview:

February’s Lessons will guide youth in understanding the transformative power of discomfort through fun, interactive, and supportive activities that encourage them to see discomfort as an opportunity for growth, learning, and resilience. Youth create a “Comfort Zone” map, dance to music of their choice, and share how overcoming fear can help us step outside our comfort zones.

2024 Theme: A Grand Rising
February Monthly Theme: Divine Discomfort
Week 2 Value: Where Comfort Ends, Transformation Begins

Spiritual Lesson: Overcoming Challenges

Youth discuss times when they overcame challenges by stepping out of their comfort zone and how that impacted their lives. They discover how fear can act as a barrier to personal growth and develop strategies to overcome uncomfortable feelings when faced with the unknown.

Active Listening: Book/Music/Video

Book: The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do by Ashley Spires

Music: Mood Booster playlist

Video: Kung Fu Panda3 clip:  “If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are now.”

Video: Comfort, Stretch, Panic Zones How do we grow – Daniel Musselman (for teens)

Creative Expression: Comfort Zone Map

After explaining the concept of a comfort zone map – illustrating what’s inside and what lies outside, youth draw or write about things inside their comfort zones and things they’d like to explore outdoors. We share and come up with ways each of us can push through at least one comfort zone.

Connecting/Spiritual Practice: Beyond My Comfort Zone

Youth discuss the relationship between dance, movement, and breaking through comfort zones and discuss feelings associated with trying new things, like the character in the book. They watch a video about kids getting past their comfort zone. The youth’s challenge for the week will be to somehow step out of their comfort zones.
