December Theme: Celebrating the Light and the Dark
Week 3 Value: Finding the Light in the Darkness – Solstice Celebration
Affirmation: “Even in the darkness, I find the light within me.”

Curriculum Overview

In this special Solstice and Christmas service, children and teens explore the sacred partnership between darkness and light, reflecting on how quiet, challenging, or uncertain moments can lead to new understanding, resilience, and hope. Drawing wisdom from both the Winter Solstice and the Christmas story, youth learn that light is not something that replaces darkness, but something that is revealed within it. Through story, reflection, and shared meaning, they are invited to recognize moments in their own lives when stillness or difficulty became a doorway to growth.

Activity – Community Solstice Ceremony

As a central experience, children and teens participate in a Light-in-the-Dark Labyrinth Walk, a gentle, meditative practice that honors inner reflection and renewal. As they move slowly along the path, youth are encouraged to carry a quiet intention, releasing what no longer serves them and welcoming the light they are ready to birth. At the center, each participant places a small light, symbolizing hope, insight, or a new beginning. Before class—and as an alternative for youth who are unable to participate in the labyrinth ceremony—we will also offer ornament decorating. This creative activity provides an accessible, meaningful way for all children to engage with the theme, allowing them to express the light they carry and take home a symbol of reflection, hope, and seasonal joy.
