Curriculum Overview:
Youth discover how the words “Up Until Now…” help them to acknowledge the past while creating space for new possibilities. We get to examine where we may feel stuck in our life with old ideas and discover that when we stay curious and open to trying new things, we see positive changes more often.
2024 Theme: A Grand Rising
March Monthly Theme: That’s How We’ve Never Done It
Week 2 Value: Up Until Now…
Affirmation: I release attachment to old ideas and open to new possibilities.
Spiritual Lesson:
Youth discuss the concept of attachment to the past and how it can influence our present behavior and mindset. They will be introduced to the idea of “Up Until Now… as a tool for acknowledging past experiences while opening up space for new possibilities.
Active Listening: Book/Music/Video
Book: Your Fantastic Elastic Brain: Stretch It, Shape It, by JoAnn Deak, Ph.D.
Book: Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss
Music: Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson and Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield
Creative Expression: Reflection Cards
Youth pairs take turns drawing from a set of Reflection Cards with prompts “Up Until Now… and complete the statement with an old thought that prevented them from experiencing life fully. After reflection and armed with the knowledge of who they are, they create a new statement that is in alignment with creating new possibilities and growth.
Connecting/Spiritual Practice: Past vs. Present Youth take turns reading past and present experiences or beliefs, and other students move to one side of the room if they agree with the past experience and to the other side if they relate with the present experience. We discuss how our perspectives can shift over time and how personal growth happens with embracing new possibilities
