Curriculum Overview
Youth get acquainted with one of their worries, make it come alive on paper, and then, using their Paradox Mindset, come up with a solution using mindful tools such as acceptance, truth, perspective, and affirmative prayer.
2023 Theme: Living Out Loud!
October Monthly Theme: Playing with Paradox
Week 2 Value: Being Comfortable with Discomfort
Affirmation: My worries turn into solutions when I’m open to a new perspective.
Spiritual Lesson: Being Comfortable with Discomfort
Sometimes, worries can get bigger when we keep them to ourselves or ignore them. It is important to know that feeling worried is natural and can create an awareness that may be necessary to keep us safe. Other times worry is based on a story we make up as we seek understanding of a troubling circumstance. When we learn to accept our worries and search with love and truth in mind, we give ourselves the freedom to use tools to help empower us to seek peace, balance, and perspective.
Active Listening: Book/Music/Video
Book: Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival
Movement: Yoga Warrior Poses
Music: Perspective (live) – CCV Music (lyrics)
Creative Expression – Making Friends with Worries
Youths describe how worry feels and what happens to their worries when they try certain things to get rid of them. We each draw a picture of a worry we have or had, focusing on the size, color, and shape. We take turns introducing our worries to each other.
Connecting/Spiritual Practice: Whose Worry Is This Anyway?
We place all of the worries from our activity earlier in a box along with some additional worries. Without looking, we choose a worry and act out a way we would help understand and then solve the worry using mindful techniques such as acceptance, affirmation, and perspective with our paradox mindset.
